Preliminary Itinerary
Preliminary Itinerary Outline:
Itinerary focuses on the Baroque and Spanish Catholic heritage of Lima, centered around St. Martin de Porres and St. Rose of Lima. Also visiting sites important to Inca heritage. The Culinary scene of Lima will be especially featured. Spend time in the neighborhoods of Barranco, Miraflores and the Historical Centre.
Day 1, Sept 9: Arrival of Guests. Reception and Dinner. Welcome and private reception, Dinner, and Pilgrimage Talk.
Day 2, Sept 10: Mass and Tour of the Iglesia de las Nazarenas. We will have Mass with the local community, as they have Masses at every hour during the day. There will be time to pray and venerate the miraculous image of the Señor de los Milagros which is the premier icon of Lima. After lunch, we tour the Cathedral. To gain the plenary indulgence, we say the Rosary in the Cathedral. We will venerate the tomb of San Toribio de Mogrovejo. The Conquistador and the Founder of Lima, Francisco Pizarro, is also buried here in a crypt alongside the Archbishops of Lima. After touring the Cathedral, with some free time to view and to pray, we will walk out into the Plaza Mayor of Lima. Lima was one of the most important cities in the Vice-Royalty of Peru which spanned most of Latin America under Spanish rule.
Day 3, Sept 11: We will have Mass and a brief reflection on the Life of St. Rose of Lima at her birthplace, what is now the Basilica de Santa Rosa de Lima. At Mass, we will venerate her first-class relic. Afterwards, there will be a tour of her birthplace, which is commemorated by the convent next door.
We will walk down the street to the birthplace of St. Martin de Porres. We will tour the house with an explanation of the importance of his birth and his miracles. After Lunch, we will visit the Convento de la Merced: Rosary and veneration of the relic of Our Lady’s Veil at La Merced.
Day 4, Sept 12: We will have Mass at Iglesia de la Virgen Milagrosa (Miraculous Medal Shrine). After Mass, we will then proceed to explore the Inca roots of Lima, to visit the ruins of the Huaca Pucllana, a brick pyramid that is about 1500 years old which is nearby. We will then proceed to the Museo Larco for a typical Peruvian lunch, and then tour the Museum which contains numerous masterpieces of ancient Incan Art from gold to pottery. For those who would wish, Vigil Mass will be offered at the Iglesia El Sacramento, two blocks north of our hotel, Hotel B.
Day 5, Sept 13: Sunday Mass is at the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Sacred Heart-San Pedro. There will be time to view this magnificent Church from the 18th century. Lunch will be in Miraflores, where we will have a tour of the neighborhood and its ocean views. There will also be free time to explore Miraflores on your own and for shopping.
Day 6, Sept 14: This is our day dedicated to what is magnificently baroque. In the morning, we will have Mass at the Iglesia de Santo Domingo. Here repose the relics of St. Martin de Porres, St. Rose of Lima and St. Juan Macias. After a time of personal prayer after mass, with veneration of the relics of these three saints, we will visit the Convento (Museum). Lunch will be in the neighborhood of Barranco. After lunch, we will visit the Museo Osma, famous for its collection of Peruvian Baroque Sacred Art (1500-1700s).
Day 7, Sept 15: Mass and Tour of the Convento de San Francisco. This is a UNESCO world heritage site known for its Church, Library and Catacombs. After lunch, we will proceed to the historic centre of Lima to visit the Casa de Aliaga, an historic mansion with preserved interiors and walk through the surrounding streets of colonial mansions with their balconies. We end our time in historic Lima at the Archbishop’s Palace.
Day 8, Sept 16: Mass and visit with a Catholic Apostolate in Peru, serving the poor of the Andes. Lunch will be in Barranco. We will have a tour of this bohemian neighborhood afterwards and free time before returning to the hotel nearby. Dinner will be at a premier restaurant of South America.
Day 9, Sept 17: 7:30am Mass at the hotel. Departure of guests.
